I was thinking about penning this post on band promotion because I have often heard new bands and struggling musicians wishing they were more paying gigs. Getting a paying gig is great, After all… you would spend considerable time, energy and even cash getting your act together.. rehearsing, touring rehearsals and gigs (gas is usually a pain should you travel by car), buying your gear, etc. But receiving payment gigs for first time acts can be quite difficult.
Because i believe that it is great to acquire paid, I would not mean to express think about a band as a business. What I am saying is, it could be practical to no less than have your costs covered.
Needless to say, that might be determined by you and your reasons why you’re in a band to begin with.
Some bands desire to play; love playing; believe playing and achieving their music out there is the better compensation there is certainly… and also the return of these acquisition of effort, time and cash is always that chance to wake up there and PLAY. There’s also others who work towards a long-term goal like building their unique following and achieving their music across in their mind.
Exactly why you do it, basically sums it down.
But, should you wanted to get paying gigs, here are some actions.
1. Work on Your products or services
Occasionally I come across a client who struggles with promoting their services or products, and hang in many effort only to get minimal results. The reason is, they haven’t yet managed to accurately develop, define and refine their product, which is why aggressively promoting something mediocre will invariably yield mediocre results.
So what exactly is your product? This rock band, plus your music. The key question is how would you set yourself in addition to the rest. What exactly is it you do that is exclusive, or the facts that you can do a lot better than all others?
“What do you want website visitors to remember and LIKE you for?”
2. Define Your Music/Repertoire
Repertoire defines what sort of band you’re. It also defines who your audience is. In my opinion writing and recording original materials are great because insurance agencies your own personal music you develop an asset that others do not have. It’s that final amount of a collaborative creative effort that music news BUT, does not guarantee success, since for the band being successfully with regard to your own music, you’d probably first should attract bavarian motor works logo which gets to know and regards.
About the same note, being a cover band does not always mean you are unable to get paying gigs. There are a lot of canopy bands which will get paid well for small bar gigs and even major events.
Exactly what it comes down to will be the novelty of the band, plus your draw. Novelty is always that something about yourself that individuals should come see; plus your draw will be the size the crowd you can gather your gigs.
3. Market Yourself
You need to sell yourself to people who you suspect would thank you for band along with what you are offering. You can find basically two kinds of people you wish to market to; you can find those who you need arriving at your gigs and appreciating your own music, and also the people who find themselves capable to hire you for gigs.
This can actually be the classic “the chicken or egg scenario”, where you actually increase your audience and acquire more exposure when you are playing more gigs, but to get more gigs you have to acquire invited or hired by people who have help to produce gigs happen.
Nevertheless it doesn’t have to be complicated. You need to simply do both at the same time.
Networking is the vital thing. Greater people you can meet, the greater contacts you establish, the closer you can your goal.
4. Management / Representation
You need a manager. A specialist figure who you trust and rely on to dedicate yourself nothing less than the success and well-being of the band.
A supervisor must be a tenacious businessman. He’s a negotiator, understands marketing, and more importantly he believes within the product he is entrusted with. His main goal would be to sustain and develop further the merchandise he manages.
Using a manager will surely have several advantages, the other of the things that managers being able to do that bands that manage themselves cannot, is be objective. The manager sees a thing that individual members in a band don’t see, this is especially true when some people in this rock band develop egos that cloud their judgment. Members usually tend to get tunnel vision and can not respond well to other people’s opinions that will not be flattering, a manager knows if criticisms are valid and take these not emotionally but objectively.
A supervisor is both a member of the gang and outsider; an affiliate as he works together with the gang to realize their dreams. He’s an outsider who are able to make rational decisions and even be critical of the group when it fails to deliver what their audience expects.
Musicians is often one of the most stubborn of individuals, and also the least receptive to criticism, plus a trusted opinion from a specialist figure may help this rock band try to better the merchandise. Keep in mind that the manager is first and foremost a business person, and he runs this rock band because it’s “profitable”… the better to showcase a band, the greater money commemorate, the greater money the manager makes at the same time.
Managers should also be very aggressive and chronic, an associate of mine (a manager for a huge act) once told me a story about how she approached bar after bar only to get denied every time and it was given a variety of reasons and excuses. She never threw in the towel, and failed to give up on her band… today that band is a major recording artist… and they are big for a long time now.
