The Magical Handshake ~ Have You Used it? By Faith Faith BBE, CTM, NE

Everyone knows the significance of a great first impression. In mere seconds of your meeting, people attain various details about us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, bodily proportions, posture, demeanor and the sound of our voice. It’s an important time as there is no second opportunity to produce a good first impression.

This happens … the handshake.

I once took a communications class at a nearby church. The trainer had 30+ attendees fall into line single file. The instructions could look him inside the eye and shake his hand. I had been confident I knew how to properly shake hands.

Following your last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me what you considered my handshake. Was it an excellent handshake or a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It was a firm grip like mine. His handshake confirmed to me I knew how to shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”

He then said a thing that completely required aback.

He explained the reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. If the handshake was firm, his was firm. If it was a light touch, his would be a light touch. Should they used their contrary to grasp his, his other hand grasped theirs. He was quoted saying this handshake technique creates an instantaneous good impression and likeability.

Likeability?

Yes. It’s just like the way we feel when we meet an unfamiliar person and discover we share the identical name. Or when in conversation using a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like that person. This is why I think of it as the Magical Handshake.

From here on, It is advisable to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, allow them to shake yours. Mirror the things they’re doing. If you’re offered a firm grip, mirror a firm grip. If you’re offered a soft grip, mirror a soft grip. Be sure you mirror the shake too. It’s everything about the grip and shake.

The only exception occurs when someone provides you with a handshake with their palm facing down. While you shake hands, they have the upper-hand and are in charge. They dominate. This is what’s called a hostile handshake.

When offered an aggressive handshake, respond by giving them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start by having your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with both you have. Then, straighten their handshake vertically with a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates for them, “we are equal.”

The next time you would like to make a good first impression, supply the Magical Handshake a go. Get it done if you park and fly people. It’s a straightforward, surefire way to improve your likeability factor.
