Sex with animals is eternally fascinating. The part of our brain that registers disgust seems to house our primal instincts, along with bestiality, often there is the intoxicating fear that in the bottom of the revulsion is our own sexual desire. We’ve internalised enough Freud to learn, or think we understand, that that which you repress is what we want. Nevertheless the fascination can also be aesthetic and intellectual – bestiality can be so unnatural that we can’t help but admire its artistic duality.
There’s enough going on in western art – through the escapades of Zeus with a Midsummer Nights Dream to Beauty and the Beast to Edward Albee’s 2002 have fun playing the Goat. It’s actually a staple dream about our civilisation. And Woody Allen’s movie Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex proves that sex with sheep is fundamentally funny. What about those people for whom it isn’t a poetic culmination or even a comic set-piece, but a real sexual drive? How can they manage society’s disgust, and the way would they actually ‘do it’?
