Health and vaccinations

There aren’t any mandatory vaccinations for those traveling to Tajikistan although you must have up-to date vaccinations for Typhoid Tetanus, Polio as well as Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in some parts of Tajikistan which is why we advise you seek advice from your local doctor or travel specialist about the most appropriate vaccinations and preventative treatment.

Cultural Sensitivity

On our excursions, you’ll often meet local people all with their own unique tradition and customs. We therefore request that you be considerate and to show them respect. You can always count on your tour guides or tour leaders to assist you.

First, it is important to note that Central Asia has a more open-minded attitude towards Islam than its neighbors in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But, it must be remembered that it is technically considered to be a Muslim region and some caution is required in certain areas. Long-sleeved shirts and shorts are acceptable for males and females in urban areas, but if visiting any active mosques people should wear trousers that do not go below the knee, and tops that cover their shoulders. A headscarf is also advised for females. On this trip, we will be going to remote areas which are rarely frequented by tourists. Locals tend to dress modestly, therefore it is probable that you’ll feel more comfortable wearing conservative clothing.

Language and Religion

Tajik is the official tongue of Tajikistan. Russian is still widely used to communicate and for business.

A majority of people follow Sunni Islam. A small number of people are followers of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Food and drinks

The menu on this tour is mainly on soups, meat and potatoes. In the more remote areas and at higher elevations, vegetables are difficult to come by. However, there’s plenty of dried fruit and nuts you can taste.

In terms of alcohol, options are generally limited to vodka and beer. Those who want something different – Scotch or Gin for instance – needs to purchase it duty free and then bring it to the store. Mixer drinks like tonic water aren’t easy to find, though.
