The first thing you should know about travelling in Central Asia is that most regions, including towns and cities have a much more laid-back attitude to Islam than their neighboring areas to the south of Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it is important to be kept in mind that it’s technically a Muslim region and caution must be taken in certain places. T-shirts and shorts that are long can be worn by both genders in the city, but if visiting any active mosques people should wear trousers that do not go below the knee and tops that cover their shoulders. A headscarf is also advised for females. This trip takes us on remote places that are not typically visited by tourists. The locals are modest in their dress and thus you’re likely to feel more comfortable with your dress.

Language and Religion

Tajik is the official tongue of Tajikistan. Russian is still routinely used to conduct business and for communication.

The majority of people are followers of Sunni Islam. A small number of people are followers of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Drinks and food

The food served on this tour tends to focus predominantly on soups, proteins and potatoes. The availability of vegetables can be difficult get in remote areas and in higher elevations. However, there’s plenty of dried fruit and nuts are available to try.

The alcohol choices are limited to beers or vodka. Anyone looking to sample something different – like Scotch or Gin should buy it duty-free and bring it with them. It can be difficult to locate mixer drinks such as tonic water.
