There are no compulsory immunisations for travellers to Kyrgyzstan though you should be up-to-date on Typhoid Tetanus Polio and Hepatitis A. It is recommended that you seek advice from your local GP or travel clinic regarding the appropriate immunisations and preventative treatments.
Food and drink
Kyrgyzstan’s food is primarily based on meat and rice. However, there are plenty of other choices for salads and vegetable choices. You can experience local cuisines when you travel, and often overlap with other ethnicities.
The options for alcohol are limited to beer or vodka. If you want to try something else – such as Scotch or Gin – must purchase the alcohol duty-free and carry it with them. However, it is important to know that mixers, like tonic water, are incredibly difficult to find in Central Asia!
Cultural Sensitivity
It is common to interact with locals, each with their own distinctive customs and traditions. You’re asked to show respect and consideration to the locals. Your tour-guides and tour-leaders are always able to advise you accordingly.
One thing to note about visiting Central Asia is that most areas, including the cities and towns take a more laidback attitude to Islam as compared to their counterparts to the south in Afghanistan as well as Pakistan. It’s amazing how long skirts of women are in cities like Bishkek! It’s an Muslim area so it is crucial to be aware in certain areas. Both genders can wear T-shirts and shorts. But, when going to mosques, women must cover their shoulders in trousers or skirts. Men should not wear shorts.
With around 15% of the population embracing Islam, more than 80% of the people are Islamic.
Russian Orthodox.
Language and Religion
Kyrgyzstan was one of the two former Soviet Republics located in Central Asia that retained Russian as their official language. In the early 90’s Kyrgyzstan became an official dual-language country that added Kyrgyz as an additional official language. You will also find Uzbeks from the ethnic group and Tajiks in certain areas of Kyrgyzstan due to previous Soviet policy.
