Health and vaccinations

There aren’t any compulsory vaccinations required for visitors to Tajikistan although you must be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio as well as Hepatitis A. Malaria can be found in certain parts of Tajikistan so we recommend you consult with your physician or travel center regarding the correct immunisations and preventative treatment.

Cultural Sensitivity

On our excursions, you’ll often interact with locals who have unique tradition and customs. We ask you to be respectful and considerate to the locals. You can always count on your tour guides or tour leaders to help you.

The first thing to note about travel in Central Asia is that most regions, especially towns and cities are more laid back in their attitude to Islam than their neighboring areas to the south of Afghanistan and Pakistan. But, it must be kept in mind that this is technically a Muslim region and therefore some caution is required in certain places. While both men and women can wear shorts or T-shirts in urban areas, they should not be wearing T-shirts with long sleeves. But, those who visit active mosques should wear trousers that are below the knees and wear tops that cover the shoulders. Women must also wear the headscarf. This trip takes us on remote locations that aren’t often frequented by tourists. Local people are modest in dress therefore it is probable that you’ll feel more at ease in conservative attire.

Language & Religion

Tajik is the official language of Tajikistan. Russian is still routinely used in business and communications.

The majority of people are followers of Sunni Islam. A small number of people are followers of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Drinks and food

The food on this tour is mainly on soups, meat and potatoes. In the more remote and higher altitude places vegetables can be hard to find. But, there is a wide selection of dried fruits and nuts that you can try.

The alcohol options are limited to beer or vodka. Anyone looking to sample something else – such as Scotch or Gin is recommended to buy it at no cost and carry it along. Mixer drinks such as tonic water aren’t easy to come across, but.
